What is depression?

As technology and modernization have taken roots in society, people today are running in their lives. Everyone is busy. Children busy in going school, teenagers busy in building their careers, adults busy in earning for their children and saving for their old age. We all have goals and aims and we all are running behind them. This is obviously not wrong. One should have goals and seek to fulfil them. The problem, however, is that everyone is so busy that they forget to take care of the people around them.

We all have problems and issues in life. Some have career issues, some have relationship issues, some have failure issues, etc. which might have a negative consequence on our mental health, if not properly handled. People who are more emotionally unstable and who have emotional breakdowns easily are more prone to what we call today depression. Depression is the state of low mood which can affect a person's mental health, activities, thoughts, reactions, etc. A person who is depressed does not feel to engage socially. A longer state of depression can affect really bad. It is thus very important to always know about the people around you. At least one can always take care of their loved ones and know what they are doing, how they are doing, etc. By noticing the people around, one can make out if a person is depressed or not. The symptoms of depression are prolonged sadness, long sleeping hours, inactivity, lack of concentration and frequent emotional breakdowns, etc. Here we will discuss what is TMS and what does TMS treat?

What does TMS treat?

Prolonged depression can cause a high mental disorder to a person where the treatment might also become less effective. It is very important to treat a person's depression as soon as possible. For treating depression there is a quick and instant scientific treatment. This is known as TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. TMS is a form of brain stimulation (non-invasive) which affects the central nervous system by applying a magnetic field to certain parts of brains. A magnetic coil is placed above the head of the person. This coil is connected to a magnetic generator or stimulator. This magnetic coil generates a magnetic field. These magnetic fields target those parts of brains that are responsible for depression. The frequency of the stimulation might differ as per the patient's condition. TMS is actually a more tolerable scientific treatment than other ways of treating depression. Note that TMS is different from ECT i.e., Electro Conclusive Shock Therapy. Apart from treating depression, TMS is also used for treating other neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, persistent vegetative state, etc. Researches have been ongoing regarding the same. Doctors are trying to figure out the use of TMS in treating other problems as well.

How to give TMS treatment?

The therapy of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation differs from patient to patient. The condition of the patient's state of mind determines the stimulation intensity. It is the motor cortex in the brain that determines which part of the brain should be targeted first. For the TMS treatment, a patient can be called five times a week and the treatment can go for certain weeks. The stimulation can continue for a duration of 20 mins to 50 mins. There is no accurate duration since everything varies from patient to patient. Though the first treatment of TMS is also very strong, the improvement in the patient can be seen only after five to six TMS treatments. However, in cases where a patient has been in a prolonged stage of depression, then the improvement cannot be seen so soon. TMS is a better way of treating depression and other neurological disorders. It does not have harmful side effects.

What are alternative depression treatment measures?

Apart from TMS, there are other alternative depression treatment measures. For a better understanding, these can be grouped into three. These are:

1) Psychotherapy:
It is basically a way of treating psychological or mental disorder employing psychological methods. Psychotherapy is given by a psychotherapist. The psychotherapist uses methods such as day to day interaction with the person concerned. Psychotherapy aims to control a person's emotions, thoughts, impulses, behaviour, etc. However, the duration and way of the interaction between a patient and a psychotherapist may differ depending on the patient's case. For instance, in lower cases, there is one-on-one interaction of patient and psychotherapist. On the other hand, in some cases, there can be a group interaction like family interaction with the patient.

2) Drug treatment:
Another way used by people is that of taking drug treatment. There are a number of antidepressants available on the medical stores. One can use drugs to treat depression according to the doctor's suggested prescription. Yes, the drugs should be taken only after the advise by the doctor. These antidepressants target different neurotransmitters. However, the chances of successful treatment are less by these drugs.

3) Support:
The third way of treating depression is rather the most important way. This involves more of a societal involvement than any medicinal or therapist involvement. It involves the responsibilities of the family, friends and society towards a depressed person.

In Conclusion:

The first important thing that everyone needs to note in mind is that depression is not a disease. It is nothing to be ashamed of. It is nothing that is abnormal. It is nothing that is unnatural. It does not make a person mentally disturbed. It is just a mood disorder which can be treated and improved with the proper help of folks around. If you have a family member who is depressed then go talk to her. Tell her that the mood swings and breakdown she is facing are all natural and she is okay. Tell her to cheer herself up. Ask her to lightly push herself to be happy again. One should be really careful about the people around oneself. In case you see any symptoms of depression in a person, it is best to talk to them, understand them and help them.
